Warhammer Fantasy Masters 2008
When the Masters was first incepted I wanted to ensure the ability for someone to earn an invitation was as widely available as possible. Therefore I incorporated a system where invitations were awarded based on both a player's overall rank and also to players that had won selected events throughout the year. Those events were normally held in states other than NSW which was a strategy to make the Masters as national an event as possible.
History will show that after 4 years of running the Masters it has grown into a massive event generating enormous interest and support from the Warhammer community both in Australia and New Zealand. It is truly a national tournament that holds a lot of prestige for all competitors, not just the winners.
During the last 4 years the accuracy and popularity of the rankings has also increased steadily and it is now accepted as the national rankings database for all of Australia and New Zealand. The trend in recent years has been to reduce the number of invitations awarded to individual events and in 2008 I am taking it one step further. For the first time in 2008 there will be no invitations awarded to winners of particular events outside of the WA Ultimate Tournament which itself is a Masters style event to determine the best player in Western Australia.
Instead of awarding invitations to tournament winners I will be awarding invitations to players who consistently perform at tournaments across the calendar year and in the process also improving the chances of players from all states to qualify.
The 2008 Masters invitations will be awarded as follows:
- Top 10 ranked players as of November 1st 2008
- 2007 Masters winner - Jeff Traish
- Highest ranked player from NSW/ACT
- Highest ranked player from QLD
- Highest ranked player from VIC/SA
- Highest ranked player from New Zealand
- Winner of the Western Australia Ultimate Tournament
Players who qualify for 2 invitations will have their 2nd invitation pass down to the next highest ranked player overall that is yet to get an invitation independent of the player's state. So for example if the highest ranked QLD player is ranked 3rd overall, the invitation will pass down to the 11th ranked player overall (regardless of what state the 11th ranked player is from).
